Academic Benefits

The measures we implement to uplift neurodivergent students ultimately benefit ALL our learners, a truth echoed by research. Allow me to share a glimpse from my forthcoming book chapter, Bold Leadership in Action: Standing Firm in Decisions for Inclusion (Diversity and Inclusion Challenges for International School Leaders Hammer & Barker, 2024) Kart and Kart (2021) undertook a comprehensive literature review, delving into numerous studies across diverse settings concerning the effects of inclusion on the academic outcomes of students without identified neurodivergence. They poignantly noted that “previous reviews mainly found neutral or slightly positive effects of inclusion on the academic achievement of typically developing students” (p. 4). It's essential to recognize that factors such as programming, staffing, and the manner of inclusion's implementation can significantly influence its effects on students without identified neurodivergence. The prevailing positive or neutral impact of inclusion on the academic success of all students only strengthens the case for broadening inclusion across every school community.

Social Emotional Impact

Inclusive education weaves a tapestry of empathy and understanding, inviting students to embrace a kaleidoscope of backgrounds and perspectives. “When students without special education needs (SEN) share interactive learning environments with students with SEN, they have unique opportunities to learn firsthand about diversity” (Roldán et al., 2021, p. 5). A visit to any school that embraces neurodivergent students reveals vibrant communities where the seeds of compassion and care blossom, nurtured by their exposure to this rich diversity. Roldan et al. (2021) embarked on a qualitative journey to explore the effects of inclusive education on those without special needs, concluding that: Participating together in learning activities, mediated by interaction and dialogue, allows students without SEN to: (1) Build understanding and respectful attitudes toward diversity; (2) learn about social abilities related to facilitating others’ learning; and (3) enhance opportunities for academic learning and cognitive development as a result of engaging in learning together, exchanging questions and knowledge. (p. 5)

Financial Sustainability

A diverse array of financial models—ranging from cost subsidies and additional fees to innovative reallocations—can create pathways to financially sustainable frameworks that promote inclusivity within school communities. Inclusion does not have to stretch your budget. Let's think innovatively and creatively at how we can budget differently, to support this important work. Globally, exemplary institutions such as Colegio Nueva Granada, Woodland Star, American International School of Johannesburg, International School of Kenya, and Jakarta Intercultural School and others have skillfully integrated these sustainable financial strategies into their operational frameworks.
